‘Only One Earth’: Environmental Perceptions and Policies before the Stockholm Conference, 1968–1972

Abstract This article examines the emergence of global environmental perceptions and policies in preparatory phase UN Conference on Human Environment 1968–1972, based an internationally comparative study sixty-three country reports. Located at intersection global, knowledge, political history, raises two theses. First, that ‘the environment’ emerged as a field knowledge not only capitalist industrial societies but globally, thus socialist non-industrial too. Second, demonstrates large overlap taken across geographical ideological lines. Thus, sheds light understanding problems well national international policy measures around 1970 thereby contributes to question how governance field.
